Zoo Keeper For a Day 2015

University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, 10 Nov 2015 - Ever wondered what it would be like to work as a zoo keeper? ‘Zoo Keeper for a Day: Zoo Negara Volunteer Programme 2015 was held on 10th of November 2015 (Tuesday) at Zoo Negara, Hulu Kelang, Ampang by UNMC Nature Club. This event has provide a great experience for participants to explore behind the scene as a zoo keeper. Participants would have to assist zoo keeper in providing daily care and routine for the animals.Besides, they will also have to assist zoo keepers in exhibit maintenance

This event had provided a great opportunity for participants to interact with animals. Learn the needs and social behaviour of the animals by assist zoo keepers in different sectors, including exhibit cleaning and animal behavioural enrichment activities. Most important, raise awareness on wildlife conservation in participants.

On the event that day, 37 participants registered at the SA bus stop near cafeteria and bus departed from university at 6.50 a.m. At 7.50 a.m., participants proceed to Gate 3 and registered with the Education Office to become a volunteer. After the registration, education officer briefed the volunteers on the rules and regulations and also safety precautions. At 8.30 a.m., the volunteering work begun. Volunteers were divided into small groups and work is distributed by the Zoology Duty Officer. They were assigned to different sectors such as Aquarium, Reptiles Site, Savannah Walk and others. Volunteers assisted zoo keepers in the daily care of animals, including exhibit cleaning and feeding.

After two hours of work, volunteers rested for thirty minutes and are replenished with drinks, breads. At 11.00 a.m., volunteering work resume. Volunteers followed the zoo keeper that they were assigned to and some groups moved to other sites. Volunteers had their lunch break at 12.30 p.m.. Some volunteers were released by the animal keepers earlier at 12 p.m. and they walked around the zoo. However, it started raining heavily at around 12.30 p.m. The volunteers proceeded to the staffs’ canteen. Chicken rice were prepared for their lunch. Some of the volunteers have prepared their own lunch before going to the zoo. Volunteers were happily sharing their interesting experience for the past four hours of work.

Volunteering Work Continues at 2.00 p.m.. Most of the work at different sites was done by that time. Hence, some of the groups were led by their zoo keeper to visit to different sites and knowledge about the behaviour and food of various animals were taught.

At 4.30 p.m., volunteering programme endsed and particpants are headed back to UNMC. The eight hour full-day volunteer work ended well. Group photos were taken at the zoo entrance and participants departed from zoo at 5.00 p.m. heading back to campus. All the participants reached campus at 6.00p.m.
