TOGETHER WE COMBAT FAMINE !!

#Throwback UNMC 30 Hour Famine Camp 2016

30-Hour Famine Camp is a global movement against hunger and poverty. Over the years, the 30-Hour Famine Camp has gained a reputation as one of the biggest and most notable fund-raising events in the world, particularly among young adults. Participants are required to abstain from taking solid food for 30 hours straight.

The first 30-Hour Famine in Malaysia started back in 1997 and it was a joint effort between World Vision Malaysia and Sin Chew Daily in response to the famine in North Korea. This synergism facilitated funds and as a result a record of RM2.6 million was successfully raised. The money raised is used to help children and communities living in poverty, by means of various community development projects by World Vision as an individual non- profit organisation or in partnership with other local non-governmental organisations.

UNMC 30 Hour Famine Camp 2016 was successfully held on 23rd till 24th of July 2016 at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. There were 111 participants, comprising of 86 campers and 25 committees. The camp that was lead by Koh Zhen Hau with several intentions:

  • Participants are exposed to issues of hunger and poverty experienced by certain groups of individuals in the society.

  • Participants are able to understand the improvement can be made to those communities by World Vision’s work through educational videos

  • Participants are able to experience the living life in dire conditions through various Famine Challenges and educational videos.

  • Campers have brought changes to lives by collecting donations from friends and families in order to participate in this event.

  • Participants are able to understand and educate their friends and families about the Global Hunger Crisis and explain to them what the 30 Hour Famine does to tackle it.

The two days camp started with speech giving ceremony to introduced participant to UNMC 30-Hour Famine in UG. Starting this time, participants weren’t allowed to consume any food but drinking clear water was allowed.

The ice breaking session happened at 10 am in order for campers and committees to get to know one another. Then after a short break, Hunger Challenge 1 started around the campus. Later, participants were given time to get some rest before Hunger Challenge 2 started. After a quick bath, Hunger Challenge 3 (Fun Mini Games) was played. These challenges were filled with fun games that indirectly taught participants about famine and poverty.

The second day started with dance practice and then Hunger Challenges 4. Price giving ceremony and dance routine happened around 2pm. And the camp ended around 4pm.
